Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Pat Garrett, now a sheriff, must capture his former partner, Billy the Kid.Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid may be the most beautiful and ambitious film that Sam Peckinpah ever made. The time is 1881. Powerful interests want New Mexico tamed for their brand of progress, and Sheriff Pat Garrett (James Coburn) is commissioned to rid the territory of his old gunfighting comrades. He serves fair notice to William Bonney–Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson)–and his Fort Sumter cronies, but it’s not in their nature, or his, to go quietly. Peckinpah’s theme, more than ever, is the closing of the frontier and the nature of the loss that that entails. But this time his vision takes him beyond genre convention, beyond history and legend, to the bleeding heart of myth–and surely of himself.

This is one strange and original movie. In 1973 most American reviewers responded by panning it and deriding its director, whom they saw as having betrayed the promise of Ride the High Country, been swept up in his own cult of violence, and become incoherent as a storyteller. Coherence wasn’t helped by MGM’s cutting at least a quarter-of-an-hour out of the finished film and removing a bitter, retrospective prelude. Subsequent releases have restored a lot of material, and now there’s more widespread appreciation of the depth and power of Peckinpah’s achievement.

The cast, teeming with fine character actors, is extraordinary, making the gallery of frontier denizens vivid and resonant. Coburn’s Garrett, a man who comes to loathe himself for his mission yet cannot abandon it, is the high-water mark of the actor’s career. L.Q. Jones, Luke Askew, Harry Dean Stanton, Jack Elam, and Richard Bright create indelible moments, and Slim Pickens becomes the center of an unforgettably moving scene. The presence of Kristofferson (just starting out as an actor) and Bob Dylan (whose enigmatic role is nearly wordless) nudges us toward recognizing Old West outlawry as an early form of rock stardom–flesh-and-blood gods for a primitive society to feed on. –Richard T. Jameson

Pumping Iron (25th Anniversary Special Edition)

Pumping Iron (25th Anniversary Special Edition)

In 1977, an independent documentary movie shone a light on the world of bodybuilding, becoming a huge box office hit and creating an international sensation. It launched one man’s multi-million dollar career and changed the world of bodybuilding and physical exercise forever: PUMPING IRON. Starring five-time Mr. Olympia, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie followed the 28-year old bodybuilder as he competed for his 6th title.

DVD Features:

Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents’ values with the press, and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long before he decided to run for governor of California, in 1977′s hit documentary, Pumping Iron. Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Arnold’s competitive trail but much less interesting), Schwarzenegger still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others’ psychological weaknesses. The film still feels redundant (there’s only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas–the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes–are compelling. Complete with a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film’s bodybuilders and director. –Tom Keogh

Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector’s Edition)

Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector’s Edition)

Critics and audiences worldwide hailed PULP FICTION as the star-studded picture that redefined cinema in the 20th Century! Writer/director Quentin Tarantino (Academy Award(R) Winner — Best Original Screenplay, 1994) delivers an unforgettable cast of characters — including a pair of low-rent hit men (John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson), their boss’s sexy wife (Uma Thurman), and a desperate prizefighter (Bruce Willis) — in a wildly entertaining and exhilarating motion picture adventure that both thrills and amuses! With the knockout one-two punch of 1992′s Reservoir Dogs and 1994′s Pulp Fiction writer-director Quentin Tarantino stunned the filmmaking world, exploding into prominence as a cinematic heavyweight contender. But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that reestablished John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget ( million) independent showcase for an ultrahip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin, and Phil Lamar). It was more, even, than an unprecedented 0-million-plus hit for indie distributor Miramax. Pulp Fiction was a sensation. No, it was not the Second Coming (I actually think Reservoir Dogs is a more substantial film; and P.T. Anderson outdid Tarantino in 1997 by making his directorial debut with two even more mature and accomplished pictures, Hard Eight and Boogie Nights). But Pulp Fiction packs so much energy and invention into telling its nonchronologically interwoven short stories (all about temptation, corruption, and redemption amongst modern criminals, large and small) it leaves viewers both exhilarated and exhausted–hearts racing and knuckles white from the ride. (Oh, and the infectious, surf-guitar-based soundtrack is tastier than a Royale with Cheese.) –Jim Emerson

The Mighty Boosh Special Edition DVD (Seasons 1-3)

The Mighty Boosh Special Edition DVD (Seasons 1-3)

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 10/13/2009 Run time: 588 minutes Rating: NrCome along for an extended journey through time and space with the Mighty Boosh Special Edition DVD, a seven-disc compilation of the surreal UK comedy series’ first three seasons, plus a bonus disc of live material and behind-the-scenes footage that’s sure to please the show’s growing legion of fans. Those who own the double-disc standalone editions of Boosh‘s first three seasons will find all of that material repeated here in six of the special edition’s discs, including all episodes and supplemental features, so for those wishing to get up to speed in a hurry on the adventures of zookeepers Howard Moon and Vince Noir (creators Julian Barrett and Noel Fielding), or complete their collection in one fell swoop, here’s the set to do it. It’s the seventh disc that makes the special edition a must-have for first-timers and Boosh faithful alike; chief among its many extras is The Mighty Boosh: A Journey Through Time and Space, a lighthearted but comprehensive hour-long documentary about Barrett and Fielding’s trajectory from humble standups to certifiable pop culture icons, with plenty of commentary by fellow UK comics like series producer Steve Coogan. Barrett and Fielding are also front and center for an interview at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and as hosts of a Mighty Boosh night on BBC Three from 2008, complete with their live linking segments. There’s also a glimpse at a proto-Boosh in sketches from a 1997 unreleased TV pilot called (Un)Natural Acts, which also finds the pair in a zoo setting, albeit without the outlandish props. Deleted scenes, outtakes, and a look at the creation of the berserk Sammy the Crab puppet also await the faithful; the special features have been arranged in an appropriately psychedelic manner on the disc (none are labeled, and many simply lead to visual non sequiturs), with some only available as Easter eggs, so patience is most definitely required. –Paul Gaita

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Full Screen Edition)

The next installment in the Harry Potter series finds young wizard Harry Potter (DANIEL RADCLIFFE) and his friends Ron Weasley (RUPERT GRINT) and Hermione Granger (EMMA WATSON) facing new challenges during their second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as they try to uncover a dark force that is terrorizing the school.First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry’s second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer’s Stone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart’s expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams’ score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling’s novels. –Jeff Shannon
