The Wizard of Oz

DescriptionStudio product: Warner Home Video Release Date: 12/01/2009 Run time: 101 minutes Rating: gamazons. comWhen he was released during Hollywood’s golden 1939, The Wizard of Oz did not start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film has made respectable business, but not before its TV debut this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while television Oz is now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made it a pillar animated musical comedy in the basic diet of top films U.S.. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz – The Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) – have become pop culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy’s Enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the minds of children for over six decades. The film is still as fresh, frightening and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it is loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years pass, but it’s required listening for children of all ages. – Jeff Shannon

  • I paid extra money for this supposed to be a special version of this classic (Three Disc Edition), it is quite grainy. If this has been remastered, which I doubt, it should be recalled and Warner Bros. should be honest and free exchange of new Rays and Blu own for the most they have offered 70-th anniversary. The colors are incredible, but the movie sometimes seems a little fuzzy. It is also disturbing to note that certain special features are available in standard definition 480p – all have been in 1080p high definition, especially because of the extra cost. I suggest waiting for the 75th anniversary to see if they can remaster this movie properly. Keep your old DVD for the moment! Rating: 2 / 5

  • The film is truly a classic that most people have seen than any other feature film in the history of modern cinema. I give the video itself 5 stars. So this review is strictly for new 3-WOZ Blu-ray set. I bought this when it came out because I am a big fan of Woz and I heard so many great things about it. It is nice, but I left a little down that the release is not much different from ’05 3-disc DVD set. In addition, the main menu does not play music like all ’05. This includes 3 discs (2 with images of silk screen): 1 Blu-ray disc is the Movie W / special features (including any n This is new for this series) 1 Blu-ray movie includes John Ritter and various films OZ before the ’39 Classic and the ’09 featurette Munchkins1 DVD (not Blu-ray) includes the 6-hour documentary “When the roar of the Lion” (this is a double-sided DVD) The packaging and the photos inside these disks have been somewhat of a let down. They were not as colorful and vibrant as the all ’05. By the way, look at the photos I took with my digital camera and affiché.Je did not like the featurette about the Munchkins. It included an interview with most surviving Munchkins (y including the final appearance of Mr. Mickey Carroll and Clarence Swensen, who, unfortunately, two died last year). The featurette includes clips from the induction of the Munchkins in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was but very short (only about 10 minutes) and as far as I can tell this featurette is the only new product especially for the series 2009.The film looked incredible and sounded perfectly, I can just imagine what Warner Bros. has reserves for the 75th anniversary (something in 3-D?). I recommend the 3-disc Blu-ray to any person who collects memorabilia WOZ and movies as it will be a collector’s item (like the 4-disc boxed set comes with lots of great stuff). However, if you’re just looking for the movie, you may want to get just 1-disc Blu-ray (if you can find it) or the 4-disc Deluxe Boxed Set as it is less (online) that the 3 disc Emerald Edition.Rappelez you, there’s no place like home.
